A thorny evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub or small tree, commonly growing around 2–8 meters tall. It has small oval leaves, thorny branches, tiny greenish flowers, and small round fruits that change from green to dark purple or black when ripe. The ripe fruits are edible and the plant is also used traditionally in several regions for various local purposes. It grows naturally in tropical and subtropical areas, particularly in scrubland, forest margins and open areas, and tolerates relatively dry conditions.
