A small to medium-sized evergreen tropical fruit tree, generally growing about 5–12 meters tall when mature. It has a spreading crown, compound green leaves, small pink to purplish flowers, and distinctive five-ridged fruits that turn yellow to golden-yellow when ripe. When cut across, the fruit forms a star shape. The juicy fruit has a sweet to mildly sour taste and is eaten fresh or used in juices, salads, pickles, jams and other food preparations. It grows best in warm, humid tropical and subtropical climates, with plenty of sunlight, regular moisture and fertile, well-drained soil.
