An evergreen tropical tree, naturally capable of growing about 10–15 meters tall. In commercial cinnamon plantations, however, it is usually pruned and maintained as a much smaller multi-stemmed shrub for easier bark harvesting. It has smooth aromatic bark and glossy, leathery leaves with three prominent veins running from near the base. Young leaves often appear reddish or copper-colored. It produces small pale yellow-green flowers followed by dark purple-black fruits.The fragrant inner bark is processed to produce true cinnamon, an important culinary spice used in foods, desserts and beverages.
