It is a fast-growing evergreen tree, commonly reaching about 15–25 meters in height. Mature trees develop a fairly dense, spreading crown. The tree has distinctive long, curved, leathery green phyllodes rather than typical compound leaves. It produces numerous small yellow flowers arranged in cylindrical spikes, followed by twisted or coiled brown seed pods. It is widely planted for timber, fuelwood, charcoal, shade, roadside planting and erosion control.
