It is a medium-sized evergreen to semi-evergreen tree, commonly about 10–15 meters tall. Under favorable conditions, mature trees may reach approximately 20–25 meters. It has a broad crown with very large, strongly veined leaves with serrated margins. The tree produces large, attractive white flowers with numerous yellow stamens, followed by distinctive round, greenish-yellow fruits. The sour fruit is used in curries, chutneys, pickles and other traditional foods, particularly in South and Southeast Asia. The tree is also useful as a shade and ornamental tree.
