A medium-sized evergreen fruit tree, generally growing about 10–15 meters tall when mature, though favorable conditions can produce taller specimens. It has a dense crown with simple, glossy, finely serrated leaves, clusters of small white fringed flowers, and oval fruits that are green when young and may become greenish-yellow to bluish-purple as they mature. The sour fruits are commonly used for pickles, chutneys and preserves and may also be eaten after suitable preparation. The tree is also planted for shade and ornamental purposes. It grows best in warm, humid tropical and subtropical climates, preferring good rainfall, adequate sunlight and moist but well-drained soil.
