A small to medium-sized deciduous fruit tree, usually growing around 5–10 meters tall when mature, although some trees can grow taller. It has a spreading crown, small glossy oval leaves, often thorny branches, and round to oval fruits that change from green to yellowish and finally reddish-brown as they ripen. The fruits are edible and can be eaten fresh, dried or preserved. They are also used for pickles, jams, candies and various traditional food preparations. It grows well in warm subtropical and relatively dry climates, prefers full sunlight and well-drained soil, and is notably tolerant of drought and poor soil conditions.
